Reiki
What
can I say about reiki that hasn't already been said? Reiki was the
result of Dr. Mikao Usui's quest to understand healing, in the context
of his profound faith and spirituality. For an excellent background to
the beginnings of Reiki and its further spread into the rest of the
world, I can recommend the book Beginner's Guide to Reiki --
Mastering the Healing Touch, by David F. Vennells.
What I can talk about is my own experiences with reiki. I have a very dear friend that was dying of some form of cancer. His wife was his main care-giver, right up to his transition into the beyond. She was the one who administered his medications, and watched his suffering. In a quest to make his suffering easier, she received the first reiki attunement, and then used reiki to help her husband's suffering. She reported to me after his passing that the reiki sessions were very beautiful times for them, passing this energy through one another -- she receiving it from the Cosmos and he from her loving hands.
Now, when I heard this story, I really didn't think much of it. Healing and the healing arts were never anything that attracted me. That took a further experience. I was at a new age expo in a city a few hours away, and there were two lectures that were going to be given at 3:00 pm. One was on acupuncture, and the other was on reiki. Now I know I said I wasn't interested in healing, but I wanted to see the acupuncture lecture because I DO have an interest in energy, and I wanted to ask how the energy was transmitted through the needles. So at a few minutes before 3:00 pm, I set off for the lecture rooms.
I got to the room where I thought the acupuncture lecture was going to take place, and when I walked into the room, I felt like a wave of "you shouldn't be here." I felt like an intruder, an outsider! I took this to mean that I was in the room for reiki. I must have made a mistake.
So, I went into the other lecture room, and no one was there, except for the instructor -- a very serene looking woman, who was praying/meditating when I walked in. She noticed my presence immediately, and looked at me and smiled, and said we would wait and see if any other people would show up. At about 10 minutes after 3:00, she decided to start her lecture on reiki.
I feel like I have been guided before, so I was used to the sensation. So, I was there to listen, and I listened. And I got interested. And to make a long story short, I received not only the first attunement, but also the second. And when the time is right, I will receive the third.
Reiki is a wonderful way to draw energy, freely available, all around us. Traditionally it is used for healing. But that's just the beginning!
